Dyson has expanded its personal care lineup with a device that targets oral hygiene rather than hair care. The CameraJet, priced at $499, is the company’s first electric toothbrush to integrate a camera directly into the brush head. Available starting today in ceramic blue or ceramic pink, the toothbrush can live-stream video of the inside of the user’s mouth to a smartphone over Wi-Fi, enabling detailed self-inspection. More notably, the camera works in concert with an artificial intelligence algorithm to detect gaps between teeth and automatically blast them with mouthwash, effectively performing flossing while the user brushes.
The price is undeniably high, but it is only slightly above that of other premium smart toothbrushes that lack the CameraJet’s combination of camera and spray mechanisms. For those who struggle with regular flossing and dread disappointing dentist visits, the device may represent a worthwhile investment.
Located just below the brush head is a small camera with a resolution of 100,000 pixels, accompanied by a strobing light. The toothbrush’s AI analyzes up to 28 live images per second as part of a feature Dyson calls Gap Optical Targeting. Importantly, these images are not stored on the device or transmitted to the cloud. Within 100 milliseconds of detecting a gap between teeth, the CameraJet emits a cone-shaped blast of mouthwash to clean the space. Dyson has designed this blast to be wider than those produced by typical water flossers, allowing it to remove plaque effectively at lower pressure. The mechanism is thus gentler on enamel and gums.
The replaceable brush heads feature a dual-bristle design: softer outer bristles clean along the gumline safely, while stiffer inner bristles focus on removing tooth stains. The brush head oscillates nearly 1,000 times per second, and the angle of oscillation continuously varies to enhance cleaning efficacy. Pricing for replacement brush heads has not yet been announced. Each head contains an RFID tag, enabling the CameraJet to track usage and alert the user when a replacement is needed—typically every three months.
To ensure consistent mouthwash delivery regardless of how the toothbrush is held—including upside down—Dyson replaced the traditional suction tube with an air bladder inside the reservoir. This bladder slowly inflates as the reservoir empties, minimizing air pockets and maintaining steady pressure. The accompanying docking station recharges the toothbrush and automatically refills its built-in 12.5-milliliter mouthwash reservoir in just three seconds.
While the CameraJet works with any regular toothpaste and mouthwash, Dyson plans to offer its own non-foaming toothpaste and low-foaming mouthwash. These formulations are designed to keep the camera’s view unobstructed, improving the accuracy of the AI-powered gap detection and flossing.
