The line between robot lawnmower and handheld trimmer is blurring. At IFA 2026, two major players—Anker and Mammotion—unveiled new robotic mowers that can handle edging tasks traditionally performed by weed whackers. These machines integrate cutting attachments and advanced navigation systems to trim grass around driveways, flowerbeds, walls, and fences without human intervention.
Anker’s entry, the Eufy Robot Lawn Mower S2 Max, features an extendable trimming arm that reaches into tight spaces alongside borders. Mammotion’s Luba 4 AWD employs a dedicated edge-cutting attachment designed to work against vertical surfaces. Both models aim to reduce the manual labor required for lawn maintenance by automating the finishing touches.
Eufy S2 Max: Vision-Based Navigation and Expandable Reach
The Eufy Robot Lawn Mower S2 Max, announced at the Berlin trade show, uses a dual-blade cutting system combined with visual simultaneous localization and mapping (vSLAM). Built-in cameras create a three-dimensional map of the yard, allowing the mower to navigate without boundary wires or a real-time kinematic (RTK) base station. This approach simplifies installation and eliminates the need for buried perimeter cables or above-ground reference stations.
According to Anker, the S2 Max can map and mow up to 3.7 acres of grass in a single session. It handles slopes as steep as 80 percent, corresponding to a 38-degree incline, and comes with all-wheel drive for traction on uneven terrain. The extendable trimming arm deploys when the mower approaches edges, clearing grass that would otherwise require a separate tool.
The S2 Max is scheduled to launch in May 2027 at a European price of €3,999. Anker has not yet announced US pricing or availability. The robot represents a growing trend among manufacturers—including Segway, Ecovacs, and Roborock—to incorporate built-in edging functionality into their mower platforms.
Mammotion Luba 4 AWD: Multi-Sensor Fusion and Independent Steering
Mammotion, known for its Luba series, introduced the Luba 4 AWD with a comprehensive sensor suite. The mower carries four cameras mounted on the front, sides, and rear, supplemented by a 360-degree LiDAR system and network-based RTK correction. The network RTK component taps into cloud services for enhanced positioning accuracy, eliminating the need for a physical base station.
Mammotion claims that this three-sensor fusion approach ensures “zero dead zones and zero drift,” meaning the mower can maintain precise paths even in complex yard layouts. The Luba 4 AWD also features independent front-wheel steering, which allows the mower to change direction without executing wide U-turns that could leave tire marks or compact the grass. This steering system aids maneuverability around obstacles and tight corners.
The edge-cutting attachment is a key differentiator for the Luba 4 AWD, designed to trim grass flush against walls, fences, and garden borders. The attachment can be added to two of the three available models.
Three Models, Different Capacities
Mammotion is offering the Luba 4 AWD in three configurations. The 3000F model covers up to 0.75 acres, while the 6000F handles up to 1.5 acres. Both support the edge-trimming attachment and use a dual-disc cutting system with a 17.3-inch cutting width. The top-tier 12000F, rated for up to 3 acres, employs three cutting discs spanning 20.9 inches but does not accept the edge-trimming attachment.
Mammotion plans to open preorders for the Luba 4 AWD later in 2026 but has not yet disclosed pricing. The company’s approach combines multiple sensor technologies to achieve robust outdoor navigation, relying on cameras, LiDAR, and network RTK for redundancy.
Market Context and Implications
The introduction of edging capabilities in robot mowers reflects a maturing market where consumers expect not just basic mowing but comprehensive lawn care. Segway, Ecovacs, and Roborock have each released models with built-in trimmers or edging attachments in recent months, indicating that the feature is becoming standard rather than optional. For homeowners, this could mean fewer hours spent with a string trimmer and a more automated approach to lawn maintenance.
Both the Eufy S2 Max and Mammotion Luba 4 AWD represent high-end offerings with price points likely above €3,000 in Europe. Their reliance on advanced navigation—vSLAM for Anker and a LiDAR-camera-RTK hybrid for Mammotion—shows a shift away from buried boundary wires, which have been a pain point for earlier robot mowers. Installing perimeter cables is labor-intensive and prone to damage from digging or frost heave. Camera- and LiDAR-based systems promise easier setup and more flexible reconfiguration if the yard layout changes.
Nevertheless, obstacles remain. Battery life, obstacle detection in low light, and compatibility with complex landscapes (dense gardens, narrow passages, irregular shapes) continue to challenge robot mower designers. Both companies have emphasized slope handling and all-wheel drive, suggesting that terrain capability is a key selling point for premium models.
Looking Ahead
As IFA 2026 shows, the robot mower category is evolving rapidly. With the Eufy S2 Max and Mammotion Luba 4 AWD, consumers gain tools that can trim edges as well as mow open areas, reducing the need for separate equipment. Pricing remains a barrier for widespread adoption, but as competition intensifies, costs may moderate over time. For now, early adopters willing to invest can expect a fully automated lawn care system that handles every perimeter.
Both products are expected to reach markets in the coming year. Anker has set a May 2027 launch window for the S2 Max in Europe, while Mammotion’s preorder schedule remains unspecified. US availability for either model has yet to be confirmed.
